History of Hurricane, WV:
Hurricane was founded in 1811 and got its name from Hurricane
Creek, which runs nearby. Hurricane has been a stopping point
for travelers between major cities, originally being a stagecoach
stop. Eventually, a railroad was constructed from the Chesapeake
Bay to the Ohio River which passed right through Hurricane. The
railroad greatly contributed to the growth of Hurricane, and it
was incorporated in 1888. Interstate 64 was constructed through
Hurricane in the 1960’s, making it an ideal location for
anyone working in the cities of Charleston or Huntington.
The city continues to grow and still holds on to the days of
the railroad with antique shops and quaint gazebos on Main Street.
Hurricane prides itself on being a great blend of suburban and
rural settings.

Hurricane Creek got its name from a phenomena discovered in 1774.
A party of surveyors noticed that all of the trees in the area
bent in the same direction. The surveyors then dubbed the area,
“the place of the hurricane.”
