History of Lockport:
Lockport, NY has a rich heritage, which includes the beginning of the industrial
age in America. Lockport was incorporated as a village March 26, 1829. During
the early 1850s, Birdsill Holly inventor, industrialist and engineer, designed
and supervised the construction of a 1700-foot underground power tunnel
in Lockport, NY, which provided water for mechanical power to three manufacturing
companies employing close to 2000 people.
In modern days, the use of pleasure boats on the canal is ever increasing.
Many look at the history of the Erie Canal and the cities and towns built
around this manmade waterway as a new source of industry - the canal tourism
industry. As in the past, the canal may once again be the source of Lockport's
growth.
