History of Michigan City:
Michigan City started as a plan to create a harbor on Lake Michigan with a transport road into central Indiana. Isaac Elston paid two hundred dollars for the land on which Michigan City would sit. Visitors were captivated by the rugged land marked with wildflowers, and also the majestic sand dunes. Though the land was unfit for farming, the water from Trail Creek made Michigan City a good location for gristmills and harvesting lumber. The work on the harbor was stalled by the coming of the railroad. Factories quickly became the primary industry in Michigan City and attracted many European immigrants with labor opportunities. Taking a walk through the city, a visitor will easily see the rich, diverse heritage of this now modern city shining through.
Factories and tourism now comprise the majority of the jobs in Michigan City. Unemployment has been on the rise in Michigan City since 2007, making a large jump in the past year. The loss of jobs has made it harder for homeowners to find the funds to properly maintain their homes.

- Michigan City was home to Abe Gibron of the Chicago Bears, Jason Caldwell (2 time Golden Glove Boxing champion) and Anne Baxtor (Academy Award-winning actress)!
- Michigan City is home to the Michigan City Breakwater Lighthouse, one of the few lights on all of the Great Lakes to retain its iron walkway atop the pier.
