History of Windsor:
Windsor was originally incorporated in 1809 under the name of Malta, ME. The name of Malta came from the “Malta War”, a violent dispute between rural settlers and the Plymouth Company over land ownership rights. Eventually the name was changed to Gerry in honor of Elbridge Gerry, and then to Windsor.
Today, Windsor is still a small rural town that clusters around a town office, fire station, post office, and the general store. The most common occupation for men in Windsor is driver/sales workers and truck drivers, while the most common for women is administrative support. Windsor is only 9 miles away from the state’s capitol, Augusta.
Since Windsor has such a long history, many of the houses are older and have fallen into disrepair. The struggling economy has made it difficult for some homeowners to afford necessary repairs to their homes, and many are just not capable of performing the labor themselves.
Fun Facts About Windsor:
Windsor is home to Hussey’s General Store, which is the self-proclaimed largest general store of Maine! Selling everything from guns to wedding dresses, you almost have to believe its slogan: “If we ain’t got it, you don’t need it.”
