History of Cairo:
Cairo (pronounced “CARE-oh” by the locals) lies at the foot of the Catskill Mountains and was settled by James Barker in 1765. The dense population of hemlock trees in the area brought in tanneries at first, but soon gave way to the industry of shingle making. Since the 1800s, though, the largest industry in Cairo has been tourism. Cairo is surrounded by beautiful, peaceful landscapes, including tree-covered mountains and antique buildings.
Cairo has declined in population since 2000. Since its major industry is tourism, Cairo really felt the repercussions of the recent recession. Jobs have decreased by 4% in the past year alone. Cairo is full of old, beautiful buildings, but as age increases, so do the work and cost involved in maintaining those homes. With the suffering economy, many homeowners find themselves unable to make the repairs their homes need.
Fun Facts About Cairo:
Cairo was one of the first towns in the area to develop ski slopes and trails.
Cairo is home to Cairo Fairgrounds Speedway, a ˝ mile clay oval track. Unfortunately, you won’t see a race today. The track was only operational for about a month in 1974 before running out of funds!
John Adams was born in Greene County, NY
