History of Johnstown:
The land that is now Johnstown was purchased by William Johnson as his own estate in 1753. He began clearing the land and brought in many tradesmen that could offer services to settlers passing through. By 1770, a steady influx of new inhabitants led the town to begin filling with town buildings, including Johnson Hall, a church, and grist mills. When Johnstown became the county seat in 1771, a courthouse and jail were constructed.
In the 1800s, Johnstown was a major center for tanning leather and by the 1900s was the glove-making capital of the world. The production of gloves brought in many other industries and offered a plethora of jobs to residents. Fulton County hit its high time during World War II, which demanded a large supply of military gloves.
Since World War II, the economy of Johnstown has declined. The production of gloves has largely been outsourced to other countries, where the cost of production is significantly lower. Few glove companies still exist in Johnstown, and the economy has suffered because of it.
