History of Kanawha County:
The formation of Kanawha (pronounced “kuh-NAW’) County was authorized by the Virginia General Assembly on November 14, 1788. It was created from parts of Greenbrier County and what was then Montgomery County, and officially formed on October 5, 1789.
Kanawha County was named in honor of the great Kanawha River that runs through the county. The river was named for the Indian tribe that once lived in the area – although the spelling of the tribe’s name has varied from “Conoys” to “Conois” to “Kanawha.”
Though Kanawha County is working hard to continue growing and developing, nearly half of the existing homes were constructed before 1960. As these homes get older, more work is required to keep them safe and livable. With an unemployment rate that has doubled since 2008 and continues to increase, basic home maintenance becomes extremely difficult to afford. Many residents of Kanawha County live in mobile homes, which can be greatly affected by the humidity and heavy rainfall.

Fun Facts About Kanawha County:
Daniel Boone lived in Kanawha County for seven years and was one of the county’s representatives in the state General Assembly in 1791!
The 1st entry in the Kanawha County Land Book (1791) shows George Washington as the owner of 19,004 acres in the county, although he never set foot on his property.
The 1500 block of Virginia Street is considered to be the longest city block in the world.
