History of Peterstown:
Peterstown was named after its founder, Christian Peters, who settled in the area around the time of the Revolutionary War. Christian Peters built the first gristmills in the area and established Peterstown as a town in 1804, even though there were only two houses in the area at the time. Members of this community have played important roles in US wars throughout the years, including the Civil and Spanish-American Wars.
Today, Peterstown is almost entirely residential with very few major industries in Monroe County. Most of the residents in Peterstown commute across the border to Virginia.
Fun Facts about Peterstown:
In 1928, William P. Jones and father, Grover C. Jones, found the “Jones Diamond,” a 34.48 carat alluvial diamond. It is the largest alluvial diamond ever discovered in North America!
Mike Foster, a Confederate soldier from Peterstown, was commended by Stonewall Jackson for being the bravest man in his army!
