History of Broadalbin:
The town of Broadalbin was organized in 1793 and was one of the first in Fulton County, but the name “Broadalbin” was not used until 1804. It was originally called Fonda’s Bush, but was renamed by Daniel McIntyre after his native home in Scotland. Many people moved away from Broadalbin to Johnstown for fear of Indian attacks.
Broadalbin’s main source of industry for years was the manufacturing of gloves. James Louis Northrup started manufacturing gloves in 1854, but his business only lasted 6 years before he moved to Johnstown. Other entrepreneurs came in to continue the glove industry, and some factories were still operating into the early 21st century. Today, Broadalbin’s main industries are retail and construction.
Fun Facts About Broadalbin: During the American Revolution, Castle Cumberland became the only military post ever in Broadalbin, and it never saw battle
Broadalbin has been known to be as cool as 40 degrees in July! Actually, that only happened once in 1953. Average July temperatures are around 80 degrees.
Broadalbin has had several severe fires in its business district. A fire in 1977 spurred the creation of a fire company that would see major fires every few years, including fires that destroyed the Broadalbin Knitting Company in 1905 and the North Main Street business district in 1914. The 1914 fire marked the third time that the business district had been burned.
